The first monthly winner in the running for the Police Officer of the Year Award has been awarded to Tactical Crime Officer Senior Constable Glen Buckle.
Senior Constable Buckle was selected from a list of nominations received by members of the public following the launch of the awards by District Officer Chief Superintendant Paul Taylor in April this year.
On a monthly basis nominations are submitted to the Rotary Club of Cairns for judging. At the end of each month an officer is selected as the winner for that month. Final judging will occur in June 2014 when the Police Officer of the Year will be announced.
Senior Constable Buckle was the standout nominee for July after he was nominated by residents of Kanimbla for apprehending offenders on two occasions whilst off-duty.
Senior Constable Buckle has become somewhat of a local hero earlier this year after he chased thieves allegedly attempting to break into cars and houses in the Kanimbla area. Local residents provided great assistance to Senior Constable Buckle by helping to contain the offenders which aided in the successful arrest of two offenders.
In a second incident late last year, three would-be-thieves got more than they bargained for when they were apprehended by Senior Constable Buckle and his pet dog Bella when they allegedly attempted to break into his neighbour’s property.
With the August winner shortly to be announced, members of the community are encouraged to nominate officers that they feel are worthy of recognition.
