Have you got your armbands for the kids?

Day one of the Cairns Show kicked off today and police are reminding parents to make a bee line for the Crime Prevention display in the Fred Moule Pavilion to pick up free armbands for the kids if they haven’t already. The free armbands will display the carer’s mobile phone number and can save many tears from both carers and children in the event that kids become separated.

Police encourage parents to talk about protective behaviours with children at large public events and what to do in the event that they get lost. Parents are encouraged to establish a contingency plan, especially for older children, by establishing a meeting place and regular meeting times to check on one another.

The Crime Prevention Display has already been popular on day one with many stopping to observe the Road Safety Display and sit on the police motorbike.

The theme of this year’s display is ‘Drive to Survive’. Sadly this year already 25 lives have been lost on our Far Northern roads. Police have set up a hard-hitting visual reminder by displaying 25 pairs of shoes on the wall representing how many people have lost their lives in road tragedies. Many have commented that the display hits home and serves as a good reminder that more care needs to be taken on our roads.

On a lighter note, the star on day one of the show was the fabulous Mary. 99-year-old Mary drew a crowd as she insisted on being helped out of her chair and onto the police motorbike for a photo. She brought smiles to the faces of many and she posed for photos and then shooed away her carer Helen from helping her down from the motorbike and instead threw herself into the arms of handsome young Constable Matt Cornish. Even after leaving the pavilion Mary was reportedly approached by many saying that they loved seeing her on the police motorbike.

99-year-old Mary stole the show and drew a crowd as she made her way up onto the Police Motorbike.

Thanks for bringing a big smile to our faces Mary!
