Man charged over hit and run traffic crash, Gillies Range Road:  Police have charged a 35-year-old Earlville man following a hit and run traffic crash on the Gillies Highway yesterday morning.

A 34-year-old Bentley Park woman was ascending the Lamb Range section of the highway, when an east-bound sedan collided with her motorcycle, causing her to lose control and crash.

The sedan failed to stop, and a number of witnesses came to the woman’s assistance.

She sustained a serious leg fracture and a number of other injuries as a result of the crash and remains in the Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.  Police attended the scene and an investigation immediately commenced.

Inquiries led officers to an address on Mulgrave Road at Earlville just before midday and a man was taken into custody.  The damaged sedan was located in the vicinity of Ishmael Road.

The man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at a road incident, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, and unlicenced driving.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on February 15.

Serious assault charge, Parramatta Park:  A 25-year-old Cairns man was charged yesterday following the alleged assault of a female police officer at Parramatta Park.

Officers had attended a Severin Street residential unit complex at around 10.45am to conduct unrelated inquiries when the man ran out the back door.  He was recognised as being a person of interest in relation to another matter and subsequently led officers on a foot chase through the unit complex.

It will be alleged that during the course of the incident, he assaulted a 26-year-old female officer, causing her to lose consciousness for a short time.

The foot chase continued and the man was apprehended a short distance from the complex and taken into custody.

He was charged with one count each of serious assault and obstructing police and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning.

City safe cameras keeping an eye on crime, Cairns CBD:  The Cairns Regional Council’s City Safe Cameras have again proven to be an invaluable tool in addressing local crime issues in the Cairns CBD over the weekend.

It only took a matter of minutes for camera operators to track down a valuable bike that had been stolen from Orchid Plaza at around 10.20am yesterday morning.  Camera room operators led security officers to the location of the alleged offender and the bicycle on Peirpoint Road. The offender allegedly fled from security officers, leaving the bicycle behind.

Camera operators continued to monitor the offender, police were advised of his location and the man was subsequently arrested on the Esplanade. Needless to say, the bicycle owner was happy to have his precious ride home returned so quickly.

A 31-year-old Portsmith was charged with stealing and receiving tainted property. He is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 27.

In a separate incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, camera room staff were advised by police that they were seeking a male suspected of being responsible for a break and enter at a Lake Street Restaurant. Observant camera room staff recalled seeing a male matching the description provided by police and led officers to his last known location.

The man was located by police a short time later on Abbott Street, allegedly in possession of a large quantity of jewellery.

A 33-year-old Smithfield man was charged with possession of property suspected of being stolen and three counts of entering a premise and committing an indictable offence.

He is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
