REMINDER OF CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND ROAD CLOSURES SUNDAY JUNE 12 FOR CAIRNS IRONMAN

This Sunday will see both men and women compete in the Cairns Airport Ironman Asia Pacific Championship on Sunday June 12.

Over 3,500 registered competitors with countless scores of visitors cheering on the competitors for the half and full course events.

  • The events swim legs will start in Palm Cove at 6.35am and 7.35am respectively.
  • The bike legs follow from Palm Cove to Port Douglas and back to Cairns.
  • The run legs follow on Cairns Esplanade and Lake Street, with circuits between Spence Street and Smith Street.

CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS: A number of traffic conditions will be changed to accommodate athletes involved in Ironman Cairns.

NOTE: The Captain Cook Highway, north of Veivers Road Palm Cove to Port Douglas, will be closed completely all day Sunday the 12th.

  • Access to and from Palm Cove Village will be via Veivers Road and Palm Cove Boulevard.
  • The Captain Cook Highway will have two way traffic all day south of Veivers Road Palm Cove to Cairns including the Cairns Airport.
  • Between Palm Cove and Kewarra Beach, the Highway will be split into three lanes, one for north bound traffic, one for south bound, and one for the Ironman cyclists.
  • South of Kewarra Beach there will be one lane for south bound traffic and one for the cyclists. The normal two lanes will be open for north bound traffic from Cairns.
Cyclists will be traversing the Captain Cook Highway from Palm Cove to Port Douglas then back to Cairns. There are plenty of vantage points to watch the action and cheer on the athletes!

Cairns Airport: Access to the Cairns Airport will remain however if you are catching flights at Cairns Airport between 10am and 6am on Sunday June 12, please allow yourself additional time to get to the airport. It is advisable you allow yourself at least an additional 1- 2 hours to get to the airport as you may encounter delays in traffic flow around this area.

Captain Cook Highway Closed:  The Captain Cook Highway North of Veivers Road, Palm Cove to Port Douglas will be closed all day Sunday June 12.

Travel time: Please allow additional time if you are traveling from the Northern Beaches into Cairns City and use the Western Arterial Road via Kamerunga if possible.

Special event Clearways: A number of clearways will be enforced from 9-12 June. Motorists are urged to check signage before parking as there will be a number of changes throughout Cairns. Vehicles may need to be towed from some areas to ensure safety of participants and volunteers. Fines may apply.

Lake Street Parking Station: Will be open on Sunday from 4am -12 midnight.

The Esplanade Lagoon Car Park: The car park will be closed from 6-15 June.

Travel to Smithfield and Northern Beaches: Access to all Cairns Beaches, Cairns Airport, Smithfield and Northern Beaches will remain at all times. There will however be changes to the traffic conditions. When planning your travel arrangements please allow plenty of time as traffic delays may occur.

Esplanade Pedestrian Paths: Paths along Cairns Esplanade and Ports North Marina will form part of the run course for the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival events including the Ironman. Event organisers have maintained access to the area for the general public at all times, however please be mindful and aware of event participants.

Sunbus services maybe delayed on Sunday June 12. Some bus stops may need to be relocated, however advice will be posted on these stops as to where pickups will occur on Sunday 12. For more information go to www.sunbus.com.au or ph: (07) 4057 7411

  • Depart Port Douglas: 6.45am and 2.15pm
  • Arrive Cairns: 8.30am and 4.00pm
  • Depart Cairns: 8.45am and 4.15pm
  • Arrive Port Douglas: 10.30am and 5.45pm

  • Child:            $10 (4-11 years old)
  • Infant:           Free (under 4 years)
