SC Peraza and PD Gizmo are always ready to go

Our Far North District Drug Detection Dogs, PD Gizmo, PD Dunstal and PD Nia earned their smackos this week during a joint Tactical Crime Squad (TCS) and Dog Squad Operation on the weekend.

A team of TCS officers hit the beat on Friday night as part of the passive drug operation.

Our Police Drug Detection Dogs did their thing under the watchful eye of handler, Senior Constable Peraza. The Drug Team alerted officers to 16 passive drug detections throughout the night.

Members of the public were stopped and propped before being searched for drugs.

At about 11.45pm one of the Drug Detection Dogs alerted officers to a 19-year-old Woree man in Grafton Street. The man was searched by police and its alleged they seized a quantity of cash, cannabis, MDMA capsules and an iPhone.

He was charged with two counts of possession of a dangerous drug and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 23.

Just 15 minutes later the Drug Detection Dogs were at it again and identified another man.

A 20-year-old tourist was searched and it’s alleged a small quantity of cannabis was found on him. He was offered and accepted a Drug Diversion under the provisions of the Police Powers and Responsibility Act 2000.

Later in the evening a man was caught urinating in public and was issued with a ticket, whilst another was given a move on direction.

Officer in Charge of Cairns TCS, Senior Sergeant Matt Stevens, explained Saturday night was somewhat different to Friday’s operation.

“On the Saturday night officers respond to a job where a 20-year-old woman had collapsed on Spence Street,’ Senior Sergeant Stevens said.

“Officers found her unconscious and suffering the affects from consuming what is believed to be MDMA powder.

“Her friends were with her and were able to provide advice to police regarding what had happened in an effort to help their friend.

“An ambulance was called and the woman was conveyed to Cairns Hospital for urgent medical treatment.”

In the event you have information about the supply of dangerous drugs, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and Dob in a Dealer to fight against ICE and other illicit drugs.
