Man charged, serious assault police, Cairns North: A 40-year-old Cairns man has been charged after he allegedly struck a police officer in the face on Digger Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man fled from police who were investigating reports of suspicious activity in the area. Police chased the man into a unit complex carpark where he was unable to escape. He then allegedly confronted the officer and struck him in the face with his forearm causing the officer to fall to the ground.

The 32-year-old male officer was conveyed to hospital for treatment of a fractured nose and facial contusions. The man was arrested and charged with serious assault police causing bodily harm, possession of implements for use in particular offences and two counts of possessing drug utensil. He is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

Microlight Aircraft crash, Mowbray: Cairns Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the crash of an Airbourne Microlight XT on Trezise Road, Mowbray River on Saturday at about 10.30am.

The 56-year-old Pilot and his 54-year-old female passenger, both from Port Douglas took off from Paddy’s Airfield at Killaloe and flew south toward the Mowbray River at Mowbray.

Just prior to the crash, the aircraft lost air speed and altitude before plummeting into mangroves south of the Mowbray River on the southern bank, on the western side of the Captain Cook Highway.

The pilot sustained minor injuries and walked from the crash site, however his passenger sustained serious chest and internal injuries and was conveyed by Ambulance to the Cairns Hospital for treatment.

Investigations are continuing.

Beyond belief, Earlville: An Earlville Police Beat officer is in disbelief after a 40-year-old Woree man attended the police beat on Friday allegedly seeking the return of previously seized drug exhibits because his ‘mates’ told him that he could request them back.

The man, who is currently on conditions not to attend the Earlville centre area was subsequently arrested by police. Following a search, police located a small quantity of cannabis and drug utensils on the man.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 29 after being charged with breaching a bail condition, possession of dangerous drugs and possession of a utensil.

Man charged, serious assault police: Detectives have charged a 28-year-old Manunda man after he allegedly assaulted police during an arrest on Friday evening.

The Cairns Dog Squad were patrolling the area when they located the man, who matched the description from a robbery earlier on Aplin Street, getting into a taxi. The man allegedly struck the Dog Squad officer in the face with his forearm after being informed that he was under arrest. He then fled the area and was chased down by the officer.

The man then allegedly pushed the officer onto the road in front of oncoming traffic. The officer managed to restrain the man who was then taken into custody with the assistance of other police.

Police were able to recover the money stolen from the robbery of a tourist. The Dog Squad Officer did not require treatment for his injuries.

The man was charged with two counts of seriously assaulting a police officer. He is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 26.

The tourist did not wish to make a complaint and was happy that his money was returned.

Sexual assault charges, Parramatta Park: Detectives have charged a 34-year-old Smithfield man following investigations into the alleged sexual assault of a woman at Parramatta Park residence on September 8. Police believe that the man is known to the woman.

The man was charged with rape and four counts of sexual assault. He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

Man charged after being spotted on camera: Police and the Cairns Regional Council City Safe team continue the excellent working relationship after information from the camera room led to the arrest of a 22-year-old Mission Beach man early this morning.

Camera room operator’s allegedly spotted the man acting suspiciously and informed police who located him on Grafton Street at around 2am. Police seized a quantity of tablets believed to be MDMA (Ecstasy). The man was charged with supplying dangerous drugs and possession of dangerous drugs. He is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 29.

Two charged, search warrant Brinsmead: A 31-year-female and a 25-year-old man, both from Brinsmead have been charged after officers from the Property Crime Squad executed a search warrant at a Longden Street residence on Friday morning.

Police recovered a quantity of property which included mobile phones, personal electronic equipment, cash and credit cards. Police also seized a quantity of drug utensils, drugs and two knuckle dusters.

The woman was charged with stealing, possession of dangerous drugs and possession of utensils.

The man was charged with entering a premises and committing an indictable offence, receiving tainted property, unlawful possession of weapons, possession of drug utensils and possession of property used in the commission of a crime.

Both are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 23.
