Weapons charges, Townsville

Police have charged a 40-year-old man with weapons offences in Townsville yesterday.

At about 5.20am it will be alleged security staff detected a pistol during a routine X-ray of checked luggage at Townsville airports domestic terminal.

It will be further alleged security staff retrieved the pistol and a further physical search of the luggage located ammunition and a magazine.

The pistol was not fitted with the magazine.

Police attended and arrested the man.

He has been charged with one count each of possession of category H weapon, possess ammunition and carry dangerous goods on board aircraft.

The man will appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court today.

There was no attempt to board the plane with any firearm as the firearm was located in checked luggage only.
