Pair charged over mountain bike theft: Officers from the Cairns Property Crime Squad yesterday charged two youths and recovered a valuable, stolen mountain bike that was stolen in the Cairns CBD last week.

The bike had been secured in the rear of a utility parked on Sheridan Street around 4.30pm last Wednesday, when it was allegedly stolen by two male youths who fled with it after being challenged by the mother of the bike’s 15-year-old owner.

Officers attended residences in Edge Hill and Westcourt yesterday and two youths were taken into custody. The bike was later located at a house in Mooroobool and seized.

The two youths were each charged with one count of stealing. The recovered bicycle will be returned to it’s rightful owner later today.

Burglary and vehicle theft charges, Cairns: A Yarrabah youth aged 16 and two men aged 17 and 19 from Edmonton and White Rock were charged on Friday as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged theft of a utility on Thursday night.

It will be alleged that the trio gained entry to a McCormack Street residence at around 10.30pm and stole property including a wallet, watches, sunglasses, computer gaming equipment, liquor and hand tools, as well as a set of car keys.

The keys were then used to steal a vehicle which was parked in a carport at the residence.

The vehicle was subsequently located and recovered from Back Beach Road at Yarrabah on Friday morning.

Investigations throughout Friday resulted in the arrests of the trio at Yarrabah and Cairns.

The 16 and 19-year-olds were each charged with burglary and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. The 19-year-old is due to reappear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later today.

The 17-year-old was charged with an additional eight offences including multiple counts of burglary, unlawful use of motor vehicles and Bail Act offences as well as single counts of evading police and attempted burglary.

He is scheduled to reappear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on March 10.

Fraud charges, Cairns: A 26-year-old Parramatta Park man was charged on Friday after allegedly attempting to sell suspected stolen property.

It will be alleged that the man had possession of a quantity of fishing gear that had been stolen from a utility at Bayview Heights on February 2.

It is further alleged that he attempted to sell the gear to two separate local second hand goods dealers on the same date it had been stolen.

Police attended a Parramatta Park address on Friday afternoon and the man was taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of attempted fraud and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on March 10.

The stolen equipment was subsequently recovered through another party and has since been returned to the owner. Investigations are continuing.
