Djarragun College Students tackle ‘A Powerful Minute’ in the hope to bring a greater community awareness of domestic and family violence

Local schools from Gordonvale to Palm Cove are lining up to help stop domestic and family violence.

Edmonton police were successful in their bid for a Safer Queensland Community Grant (SQCG) for the project which is designed to bring awareness to domestic and family violence and officially launched the ‘A Powerful Minute’ project earlier this month.

The call’s gone out for all high school students in the Cairns area, from Gordonvale to the Smithfield Northern Beaches, to create a 60 second video on the topic of domestic and family violence.

Local television news crews from WIN Cairns and Seven Local News visited police and students at the Djarragun College in Gordonvale last week where the students showed their creative flair  as they tackled the  ‘A Powerful Minute’  project about domestic and family violence.

Officer in Charge of Edmonton Police, Senior Sergeant Jason Smith said students spoke to the media and explained how many of them had witnessed Domestic Violence and that they were pleased to have an opportunity give their perspective on the problem.

“It was great to have the participation of Djarrgun College in the A Powerful Minute project as Domestic Violence is a problem across cultures,” Senior Sergeant Smith said.

“The project team looks forward to seeing how the Djarragun students view domestic violence and the creativity of their video submissions.

Acting Head of Djarragun College Senior School, Ms Mandy Ross from Djarragun College is on board too and encouraging the students to tell a story to help show the community how they can step up and help survivors of domestic and family violence.

Having a young persons perspective on the subject of domestic and family violence will provide another avenue to raise awareness and prevent domestic and family violence in the future.

The competition is now open and closes on May 1.

During Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Month in May, the winning videos will be announced and screened.

Thanks to the SQCG funding,  A Powerful Minute Project Team are offering some great prices up to $1250 in IT or multimedia prize packages.
