Cairns weekend crime wrap, Monday June 19

Assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, Mission River: A 56-year-old Napranum man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 2 charged with one count of grievous bodily harm whilst adversely affected.

The man was walking along John Evans Drive, Mission River at about 8pm Thursday with a 43-year-old local woman who was known to him. Police will allege an altercation occurred during which time the woman was struck in the head with a glass bottle.

A member of the public located the pair on the road and contacted emergency services. The woman sustained significant facial and eye injuries in the assault and was conveyed to hospital for treatment.

No lifeline for property thief, Manoora: A 34-year-old Manoora man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 3, charged with one count of stealing.

Police from Mooroobool Beat were on patrol when it’s alleged they observed a man reaching into a charity bin and removing items.

The man had amassed quite a collection of clothing, cutlery and a fondue cooker. It’s alleged the man had placed all items into a box and rode off with the bounty.

He was intercepted a short time later by officers and all property items, including the fondue set were seized.

Drug charges, Woree: A 50-year-old Babinda woman and a 42-year-old Woree man are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 3 charged with drug offences.

Police executed a search warrant at a property in Moana Close, Woree on Friday afternoon where it will be alleged they located a quantity of cannabis plants, dried cannabis, tablets, cash and drug paraphernalia.

The woman was charged with three counts of possessing a dangerous drug whilst the man was charged with producing dangerous drugs, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of a crime.

Its further alleged quantities exceeded schedule 3 limits.

Two vehicle traffic crash, Edge Hill: Police are investigating a two vehicle traffic crash that occurred at the intersection of Greenslopes and Mayers streets, Edge Hill around 12.50pm yesterday.

A white hatchback and a blue van collided resulting in the van rolling onto its side. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and were towed for examination.

A 32-year-old Whitfield man and two girls aged 8 and 3, who were in the white hatchback, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

Fraud charges, Cairns: Cairns detectives investigating the alleged theft of a credit card and subsequent fraudulent transactions executed a search warrant at a property in McLeod Street, Cairns yesterday.

Police will also allege they located a quantity of drug paraphernalia at the home.

It will be alleged the credit card was stolen on May 20 before being dishonestly used.

A 47-year-old Cairns man has been charged with one count each of stealing, fraud and possess utensils.

A 26-year-old Cairns man was also charged with one count of fraud relating to the same credit card.

Both men are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 10.
