Yesterday we welcomed 10 new First Year Constables (FYCs) to the Far North after they graduated from the Brisbane Police Academy on October 19.
The officers are now set to take up their first posting at Cairns Police Station this week, following orientation yesterday.
Of the graduating constables, three are Cairns locals, and the others hail from Brisbane, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast and even Canada!
Aged between 22 and 36, our FYCs bring with them a great deal of previous experience, having worked in teaching, retail, trades, administration, marketing, fitness and animal welfare and investigations.
Each FYC will be assigned a field training officer to mentor them for the first 8 weeks of their service before they are integrated into a team policing environment.
The mentor period enables the new constables to work in a fully supervised environment as they put into practise the skills and abilities they have acquired through police academy training.
Constable Wilson grew up in Canada and wanted to be a police officer since she was a child and said, “I’m most looking forward to meeting new people and supporting the community.”
“We’ve been well prepared at the academy and I know I’ll be doing something new every day, so I’m just looking forward to getting out there and making a difference.”
Constable Holt moved from Toowoomba and said, “I’m eager to make a real difference and get out into the community.”
We wish all our new officers all the very best as they undertake their policing career in the Far North.
