Senior Constable Russ Parker making sure this little Miss doesn’t get lost!
Show me the armbands!
It’s that time of year again when the Cairns Regional Show hits town from Wednesday, July 16 to Friday, July 18.
Local police once again provided FREE ARMBANDS to the Cairns Show Society and they are now available for early collection from the Show pre-ticket sales office at Earlville Shopping Centre.
Cairns Police will have a Crime Prevention display at this years show in our regular spot at the Fred Moule Pavillion with our police motorbike, crime prevention messages and our trusty armbands.
As with past shows, we are expecting crowd attendances to be around the 80,000+ again. We urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and keep an eye on not only your belongings, but also your youngsters so we don’t have tears, tantrums, tissues and a long line of lost children handed into the police show office.
It takes but a blink of an eye for a little one to disappear in a large crowd.
More often than not parents of lost kids tell us that ‘she was just here a moment ago’ or ‘I don’t know why he’s just wandered off”.
Bright lights, pretty things, cute furry animals, loud noises, large crowds and ‘something interesting’ will always catch the eye of an excited child.
Kids can easily be distracted, and the same can be said for most parents. It is a show of course and we are all out there checking everything out.
Collect your free armbands prior to the show to save some time.
The free armbands will allow you to include your mobile phone number you have at the show (no point putting on a number that’s left at home unattended or with a flat battery).
Tissues are in short supply at the police station so when we locate your lost child, we can make contact with you and reunite you both quickly.
Thankfully lost children were few and far between last year and we thank parents for their help.
Prior to attending the show, families should:
-
Ensure children have their armbands on with the mobile phone number of a parent at the show clearly marked;
-
Establish a rendezvous point to meet should the family become separated;
- Explain that if your child gets lost, they should stand still like they have glue on their shoes and shout out in their biggest outside voice and call out to you;
- Explain that police officers will be able to help them if they can’t find their parents;
-
Speak to children about the importance of protective behaviours;
- Help your children understand what they need to do to stay safe.
LOST CHILDREN will be taken to the Police Show office located underneath the Main Grandstand (Mulgrave Road end of the Showgrounds).
This year, our crime prevention display will feature SHARE THE ROAD and general road safety tips as well as other information about the police blog www.mypolice.qld.gov.au and other crime prevention initiatives.
Our interactive display will feature a Road Policing Unit Motorcycle which will no doubt have children of all ages lining up to simulate a ride.
Crime prevention officers will be able to provide information and advice on a variety of topics so make sure you come visit us at the Fred Moule Pavilion at this year’s Cairns Show!
