PNG party for Independence Day!

Whilst Cairns is gearing up for an influx of international visitors for the G20 Finance Ministers Meeting, our local Police Liaison Officers are continuing to work with our closer neighbours from Papua New Guinea (PNG).

TAFE North Queensland, Cairns Campus are hosting 71 new PNG Technical Vocational Education Trade Skills Scholarships students studying a variety of trade courses.

PNG Independence Day is celebrated on Tuesday 16th September. As this day holds great significance for the country, TAFE helped them celebrate in the TAFE Cairns Campus, PNG garden.

The students dressed in traditional costume, performed dances and sang with their newly formed band.

The ‘Mud Men’ and ‘Islanders’ made an appearance as well.

Police Liaison Officer (PLO) Pepsi Li presented a crime prevention information session which focused on providing safety information in an effort to prevent crime and reduce risks for the students.

Pepsi said, “They are a great group of students and I was very pleased to see they are a very happy group and very aware of their surroundings.

They are working closely with TAFE and the community and staying safe at the same time.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this group graduate at end of the year.”

International Business Development Officer, Katie Johnson said, “It’s great to have police support from the Cross Cultural Liaison Unit.

Having people like Pepsi and Maj-Lis to speak to will enable them to have someone they can talk to if they have an issue and it will also provide the students with a good understanding about property security and personal safety.

This will ensure the students have a good time while they are studying in Cairns.”

Officers from the Cross Culture Liaison Unit (CCLU) will continue to work closely with TAFE and the students throughout their time in Cairns.

Also a huge thank you to Auntie Olive Davis and Auntie Masio Nidung from Laurabada Consultancy Cairns for cooking the ‘Moo Moo’ (all the yummy food), from 6am yesterday. It was a very long day and they managed to cater to over 200 hundred students, teachers and members of the community.

Well done to everyone involved!
