On Monday, September 29, the Queensland Police Service’s new Indigenous Cadets hip Program (ICP) commenced at the North Queensland Police Academy. The 14 new members were selected after successfully completing a three stage selection process with QPS Recruiting.
The ICP is a 12 week full-time course and will provide an overview of recruit training and include an introduction to legislation, driver training, operational skills and tactics, physical training, interviewing skills, computer systems, station duty and the completion of QPS correspondence.
Sergeant Stephen Tillett from the Far North District Cross Cultural Liaison Unit, Constable Stephen Harris from Gordonvale Police Station and AO5 Adrian Coolwell from QPS Recruiting have been selected as QPS Indigenous role models to work with the indigenous cadets during their first week. They will coach and mentor the indigenous cadets about life as a police officer, community expectations and career opportunities.
“The Indigenous Cadet-ship Program demonstrates the Queensland Police Services commitment to equal opportunity and diversity in employment” said Inspector Russell Rhodes from the North Queensland Police Academy.

The training will conclude on Friday, December 19, successful members will then progress into a full 25 week recruit training program commencing at the North Queensland Police Academy on Monday, January 5 with a graduation date of June 25.
