Motorists are reminded that school safety zones will be back up and running as thousands of local students head back to school next week.
Operation ‘Back to School’ will commence at 7:00am on Tuesday October 7 and will run for the duration of the week with police conducting district-wide patrols of schools and focusing on the busy drop off and pick up times.
In addition to the 40kph school zone speed limits, officers will also be targeting driver inattention offences such as hand held mobile phone usage as well as dangerous parking activities, especially around school crossings.
Cairns Road Policing Unit officers will be highly mobile and visible during the week-long operation and will be allocated random schools and timings to maximise patrol coverage.
Also assisting with the operation will be officers from the Cairns Tactical Crime Unit Bicycle Squad. The pedal powered police will be mobilised around several local schools to assist with traffic enforcement, but will also be providing safety advice and riding tips to students who cycle to and from school.
40 kph speed zones operate from 7:00am to 9:00am and from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
