PCYC2The Queensland Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) was established in 1948 and now boasts a network of 54 branches throughout the state.

Whilst each of the PCYC branches can boast numerous success stories, our local Edmonton branch is particularly proud of one of their own young members and his achievements over the last five months.

Edmonton PCYC staff take up the story:

Michael Tucker-Perks is a young man, with courage and ambition well beyond his 14 years.

Michael, or Mick as he is known fondly by family and friends, lives in Gordonvale with his Dad Paul, and his younger sister Natalie.

Michael had struggled at school with bullying since grade three, having always been ‘the big kid’, and although being active playing football, he suffered the indignation of school-yard bullying, mainly due to his weight.

Dad Paul could see that his son was struggling with some family issues as well as his situation at school, and thought some boxing lessons at the PCYC Edmonton may help.

And help it did!

In only five short months, Michael and his family have seen incredible changes, both physically and personally. He has shed a whopping 16 kilograms in body weight, his grades have improved at school, his self confidence has grown and amazingly, he is the subject of bullying no more!

“Pele (the PCYC Edmonton Boxing Coach) has helped and taught me so much, I just love getting in the ring and sparring with him”, says Michael.

“Michael’s positive attitude and improved self-confidence have been the biggest changes, along with his weight loss”, says dad.

“He is so motivated, even at home, we’re extremely proud of him”.

Both Michael and Paul agree that Pele has been such a positive influence, very encouraging and always there for support and guidance.

Michael will continue his boxing and weight loss journey and is excited to see where it may lead in the future.

“I’d really like to spread the word, so more kids can get the benefit of boxing with Pele”, he says enthusiastically.

We are extremely proud of Michael here at PCYC Edmonton, his dedication has certainly paid off.

Good on you Mick – you’re a true champion!

Boxing lessons are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 4:30pm for juniors and 5:30pm for seniors at PCYC Edmonton, 10 Walker Road, Edmonton.
