Senior Constable Peraza and Police Dog Gyzmo a big hit with the kids at the Cairns PCYC.

Since starting in Cairns in January Senior Constable Felipe Peraza and his hard-working drug detection dogs Gyzmo and Dunstall have hit the ground running.

In three short months the trio have already toured much of the Far Northern district performing drug detection jobs in Tully, Innisfail, Townsville, Ingham, Mount Surprise and as far west as Mount Isa.   With so many jobs on the go having two dogs on hand enables Senior Constable Peraza to adequately rest his hard-working canines.

Senior Constable Peraza and his trusty pooches are in strong demand and are regularly seen at roadside traffic operations, the execution of search warrants and drug related police operations, you never know where they will turn up next.

One such place where the trio did turn up was at the Cairns Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) today. Today’s visit was a break from their normal duties and a great opportunity for the busy drug detection team to bring some smiles to the faces of the kids participating in the Vacation Care Program at the Cairns PCYC.

The kids were delighted to see the dogs in action and saw first-hand how excellent the dog’s sense of smell is when Police Dog (PD) Gyzmo was sent on a mission to find his hidden toy.

“The kids were so excited to see Felipe and his two dogs, there was lots of giggles when Police Dog Gyzmo tried to make his way across the slippery basketball courts,” said PCYC Branch Manager Acting Sergeant Samantha James.

“We are very grateful that Felipe, Gyzmo and Dunstall were able to take time out of their busy work schedule to spend some time with the kids. Not only was it an excellent opportunity to hear about how the drug dogs work but it was a great way for the kids to positively interact with our local police.”

Local media also seized the opportunity to take a rare look at the drugs dog in action. Two very brave children from the PCYC vacation care program jumped at the opportunity to stand in front of the cameras to talk about the visit from the drug detection dogs.

We apologise for the absence of photos of Police Dog Dunstall, it appears that six-year-old Dunstall is more than happy to let two-year-old Gyzmo steal the lime-light.
