Stealing and drug charges, Cairns CBD: The Cairns Police/City Safe Camera partnership paid dividends for the Cairns community again early this morning with the arrest of two men in the CBD.
Police were called to a Shields Street nightspot just before 11.30pm last night following the reported theft of a man’s wallet and phone from a table within the complex.
First response officers provided details to the City Safe team who were able to direct officers to the intersection of Lake and Spence Streets where they spoke with a 21-year-old Westcourt man.
Officers arrested the man and subsequently recovered a wallet and cash as well as a quantity of MDMA tablets.
The search then continued for a second man and officers were directed to an area near the intersection of Grafton and Hartley Streets. Officers searched the area and located a 19-year-old Manunda man hiding in a garden near the location.
He was arrested and a search allegedly yielded items of suspected stolen property including cash, credit cards and a mobile phone. Police also seized a quantity of MDMA tablets from the man.
The older man was charged with one count each of stealing and possession of a dangerous drug whilst his younger associate was charged with receiving tainted property and possession of a dangerous drug.
The stolen property was returned to the victim.
Both men are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on June 3.
Youths charged over handbag theft, Cairns CBD: Two male youths aged 15-years-old and 16-years-old were charged last night after allegedly stealing bags from a man and his wife who were walking along McLeod Street, near the Shields Street intersection.
The two offenders ran in opposite directions and the 27-year-old male victim gave chase to the younger offender, apprehending him near the intersection of McLeod and Aplin Streets.
Officers were conducting patrols in the CBD area when they observed the situation and took the boy into custody. A search of the area was then conducted and a Dog Squad team located the second youth in nearby Bunda Street.
The two youths, from Edmonton and Cairns, were charged with stealing from the person and will be dealt with under the provisions of The Youth Justice Act 1992.
