Tablelands Forensic Crash Unit officers are continuing their investigations into a collision on the Gillies Highway just outside Atherton, which claimed the lives of two local men aged 26 and 78 on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 3.45pm when a westbound hatchback collided with an eastbound utility about 300m east of the Gillies Highway/Aerodrome Road intersection.
A woman, who was the passenger in the eastbound vehicle, was seriously injured in the crash and remains in a stable condition in the Cairns Hospital.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the hatchback, a dark green coloured 1998 model Mazda 121 Metro, commenced the journey from Cairns and was being driven to Atherton via Edmonton and the Gillies Range.
Investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who may have observed the vehicle being driven along either the Bruce or Gillies Highways on Monday afternoon prior to the collision.
The hatchback is similar in appearance to the model depicted in these images. (Please note that these are not images of the actual vehicle, and are provided for comparison purposes only)
