With the Chinese New Year fast approaching it is expected that Cairns will again see a large influx of Chinese visitors to the region to this year celebrate the Year of the Horse.
Preparations have already commenced after a staggering 20,000 Chinese visitors made their way to Cairns for 2013 Chinese New Year celebrations.
Marketing manager, Vicki Tang from Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) recently invited members of the Police Cross Cultural Unit to conduct presentations to 80 tour guides as part of essential training to assist local guides working in Cairns during the celebrations.
Chinese Police Liaison Officer (PLO) Pepsi Li conducted the presentations which covered important topics including personal safety, water safety, general offences and how to contact police. PLO Li’s ability to communicate in both Mandarin and Cantonese enabled her to convey important messages to the tour guides about how to educate Chinese visitors on personal safety and tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

“It is of great benefit to not only the Queensland Police Service but also the community having a Police Liaison Officer in the region able to speak several languages. Police Liaison Officers like Pepsi Li play an extremely important role in delivering crime prevention messages and advice to our culturally diverse community.” said District Crime Prevention Coordinator, Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Tillett.
