Youths showcase fine skills at Indigenous AFL match

It was smiles all round as youths from West Cairns, Yarrabah and Kuranda took part in the first ever local AFL Indigenous Community Event at Cazaly’s Stadium on the weekend.

The outstanding event now joins the annual list of community events for the Cairns PCYC. AFL teams The Manunda Hawks and Cairns Saints Football club joined forces for the event to celebrate the contribution Indigenous people bring to AFL and highlight the importance of inclusiveness in all sports.Senior Indigenous Community and Recreation Coordinator Marc Harbrow said the event was a thrill for both players and spectators.

“Onlookers were impressed with the athleticism the young people showcased during half time of the senior’s matches,” said Marc Harbrow.

“The talented young male and female players were extremely excited to play on one of regional Queensland’s finest football grounds.

“It was without a doubt a memorable event for all. A special thanks is extended to the Manunda Hawks and AFL Cairns for helping the PCYC organise this event”.
