Chinese New Year festivities

For the past 11 years the Cairns and District Chinese Association have been working with the Cairns Community to host a Cairns Chinese New Year Festival.

2015, Year of the Sheep, saw the festival showcase the Far North’s cultural diversity and Chinese heritage at the weekend.

Chinese dragon & plosThe festival is a popular family event that featured a variety of food and craft stalls with performances by dragons, lions and Molihua Chinese dancers.

Event organisers anticipated that there was a crowd of approximately 30,000 people attending the festival with the majority flying in from China.

Local police were pleased with the behaviour of locals and visitors at the event.

Police from the Far North Cross Cultural Liaison Unit supported by Brisbane based officers, Acting Sergeant Billy Li and Constable Jin Lee were involved in traffic management and community engagement activities throughout the Chinese New Year Festivities.

Deputy Consul General Wenqi GAO (Left in the photo) and Consul YinJian WU (Right in the photo) from the office of the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China travelled in from Brisbane to attend the event.
