Schoolyard incident, Smithfield:  A 14-year-old Holloways Beach boy is assisting police with investigations into an incident at a Smithfield secondary school yesterday.

Around 1:15pm a boy believed to be a past student of the school, rode an off-road motorcycle into the school grounds and around the sports oval at speed before crashing and being detained by staff members.

Police attended and took the boy into custody. A 250cc motorcycle was also seized at the scene.  No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Drug charges, Cooktown:  Three Cooktown men aged 29, 38 and 73 were charged yesterday following a local drug enforcement operation.

Detectives from Cooktown CIB, assisted by Cairns Tactical Crime Squad officers, executed search warrants at three different addresses in the area and seized quantities of cannabis, drug utensils and a sum of cash.

The men were charged with a total of six drug offences including possession and supply of a dangerous drug and possession of drug utensils. The 38-year-old was also charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of a Category A weapon.

The two older men were issued with notices to appear in the Cooktown Magistrates Court next month whilst the 29-year-old will be dealt by way of drug diversion.

Boaties reminded to properly store EPIRB devices: Local Water Police units are urging recreational boaties to ensure their EPIRB devices are correctly stored following an unnecessary search effort yesterday.

Thursday Island Water Police received advice of an EPIRB activation near Bamaga yesterday at around 4:30pm. Officers were unable to contact the registered owner and a search and rescue response was initiated, including the activation of the rescue helicopter.

No vessel was located and the signal from the emergency beacon was subsequently traced to a street address where officers spoke with a man who was washing a vessel down. It was soon established that the EPIRB in the vessel was incorrectly stored and had activated whilst the boat was being washed, triggering a resource intensive search response.

See for further information relation to the recommended storage of EPIRB devices
