Even our segway officers wore their protective helmets
Rollerblades, roller skates, skateboards, scooters and motorised foot scooters are all classified as wheeled recreational devices.
Toys such as a child’s pedal car, scooter, tricycle or similar toy used by a child under the age of 12 years is classified as a wheeled toy.
Riders of wheeled recreational devices and wheeled toys, other than a motorised foot scooter, are not legally required to wear a helmet.
Riders however are encouraged to use common sense and wear protective clothing including an approved helmet, knee/elbow pads and wrist guards to prevent injuries.
You must:
- keep to the far left side of the road and to the left of a shared path or footpath
- give way to pedestrians on a footpath or shared path
- give way to bicycles on a bicycle path.
Riders of wheeled recreational devices and toys have additional requirements and MUST NOT:
- travel on a road with a dividing line or median strip, or a one-way road with more than one marked lane
- travel on a road with a speed limit greater than 50km/h. During the day you can ride on a road that is not a main road and has a speed limit of 50km/h or less, but you must stay to the left hand side of the road
- travel on a road at night but you may cross a road while riding your wheeled recreational device by the shortest route (if you need to ride at night, you can ride your wheeled recreational device on a footpath)
- travel alongside more than one other person or vehicle travelling on a road in the same direction, unless you are overtaking
- cause a traffic hazard by moving into the path of a driver, or unreasonably obstruct the path of any other road user.
Sections 240–243 of the Queensland Road Rules apply.
